5 Great Tips To Not Gain Weight During The Holidays

December 17, 2025 by Jack

The holidays are a time of celebration, and it's easy to overindulge with all the delicious food and drinks. But with a little planning and mindful eating, you can enjoy the festivities without gaining weight. Here are 5 great tips to help you stay on track:

1. Don't Arrive Starving (or Overstuffed):
* The Pitfall: Walking into a holiday gathering on an empty stomach can lead to an all-out binge. Conversely, feeling overly full before you even start can make you less mindful and more prone to overeating later.
* The Fix: Have a light, healthy snack a couple of hours before the event. Think a small handful of almonds, a hard-boiled egg, some Greek yogurt, or a piece of fruit. This will help take the edge off your hunger, making you less likely to overeat when faced with a buffet of temptations.

2. Be Selective and Mindful of Your Plate:
* The Pitfall: Loading your plate with everything in sight, especially calorie-dense favorites, can quickly lead to overconsumption.
* The Fix: Before you fill your plate, scan the offerings and choose the items you truly want to enjoy. Prioritize lean proteins, vegetables, and fruits. Enjoy smaller portions of richer dishes, savoring each bite. Consider making "two passes" at the buffet: first for your main meal, and then a smaller second pass for a taste of something you’ve been craving. Fill at least half your plate with vegetables.

3. Hydrate Wisely and Limit Sugary Drinks:
* The Pitfall: Liquid calories, especially from sugary cocktails, eggnog, sodas, and juices, can add up very quickly and contribute significantly to weight gain without providing much satiety.
* The Fix: Opt for water, sparkling water with lemon or lime, or unsweetened tea. If you choose to have an alcoholic beverage, do so in moderation and consider pacing yourself. Alternating alcoholic drinks with water can help you stay hydrated and reduce overall consumption.

4. Practice Portion Control and Eat Slowly:
* The Pitfall: Eating quickly and without much thought makes it harder for your brain to register fullness, leading to overeating.
* The Fix: Be conscious of your portion sizes. Use smaller plates if they’re available. Chew your food thoroughly and put your fork down between bites. Engage in conversations and distractions between bites. This "mindful eating" approach allows your body to signal when it's satisfied, often before you've overdone it.

5. Prioritize Movement and Stay Active:
* The Pitfall: The holidays often mean less structured activity and more sedentary time.
* The Fix: Don't let your exercise routine completely fall by the wayside. Even short bursts of activity can make a difference. Go for a walk with family, play active games, or do a quick home workout. A brisk walk after a big meal can help with digestion and burn some extra calories. Prioritizing some form of movement can also boost your mood and energy levels, making you less likely to seek comfort in food.

By incorporating these simple strategies, you can navigate the holiday season feeling festive, satisfied, and confident that you're maintaining your well-being. Enjoy the celebrations!
